If you are actually shopping for a small portable power source for a campsite, skip down to the inverter generator note at the end. Most of this will be overkill for that situation.

This list is for pre-purchase and pre-installation review. It doesn't replace a licensed electrician or engineer. It simply helps you catch the expensive mistakes that happen before the generator arrives.

The phrase 80 kW Perkins home generator has no real meaning until we know what it must start and run. One customer needs 80 kW because they want a shop, multiple AC units, a well pump, and outbuildings on backup power. Another customer asks for 80 kW because they are afraid of the dark and want the biggest option. Those two projects need very different quotes.
Ask for a load list of everything that must run during an outage. Then assign running watts and starting watts. Motor loads matter more than most people think. A pump or air conditioner can draw several times its running wattage for a few seconds on startup. That starting surge affects generator sizing and transfer switch ratings.
It took me a few years of generator orders to learn that a generator project is a system, not a skid. You are not buying just an engine and an alternator. You are buying an electrical system that has to match a specific site.
2. Say standby or prime out loud before you compare quotes
The same Perkins engine family can be rated differently for standby power and prime power. Standby rating is for emergency backup and limited running hours. Prime or continuous duty is for longer run times and often comes with a lower usable kW number after considering the duty cycle.
If someone quotes a 40 kW Perkins generator in Florida without saying whether that number is standby or prime, slow down. A hurricane backup that runs only during outages may be fine on a standby rating. A facility that runs the generator for 10 hours a day because the utility is unreliable needs a prime-rated package or a larger set.
The spec sheet should show both ratings. If it doesn't, ask for the manufacturer data before you sign.
3. Verify the transfer switch as a system, not just the contactor size
When people search for a 200 amp contactor, they are usually inside an automatic transfer switch and need to replace a switching device. In that situation, the part number matters. A 200 amp contactor is not fully defined by its amp rating alone. You also need coil voltage, number of poles, voltage rating, mechanical or electrical hold behavior, auxiliary contacts, and listing approval for the transfer switch assembly.
If you are installing a new generator, keep the same idea in mind. The transfer switch is sized by the load that passes through it and by the system's available fault current. The generator kW rating does not automatically tell you the ATS rating. For a large 80 kW home generator tied into a 200A panel, the ATS is the bridge between the generator output and your house loads. A 200-amp mechanism only supports loads connected behind it. It is not a magic capacity upgrade.
Ask for the full transfer switch model number and read its data sheet. This step has caught more mistakes in our shop than any other.
4. In Florida, review the site before the weather does
The search for a 40 kW Perkins generator Florida spikes before hurricane season. That means buying decisions get rushed. Rushing leads to generator sets sitting in a hot room with no air, or an outdoor enclosure placed too close to the wall to actually cool itself.
Most generator data sheets rate output at reference conditions. In South Florida, the heat and direct sun can reduce the available margin. Ventilation is not optional. The unit needs enough combustion air and cooling air to make full power when the outside temperature is already uncomfortable.
Also check flood level, wind load, and fuel tank anchorage. A generator can be the best piece of machinery on the property and still be useless if the installation does not survive the event it was bought for.
5. Do not gloss over fuel filtration and the vapor separator fuel filter
Most generator sets that fail under load are not victims of engine failure. They are victims of fuel problems. Diesel can sit in a tank for months, collect water, grow microbial contamination, or develop air bubbles when filters are changed. A fuel system that looks fine at no load can fail the moment the load demands more fuel.
Look at the generator service manual before you place the order. It will list the primary fuel filter and water separator, and on some systems, a vapor separator fuel filter. That vapor separator helps remove air and fuel vapor before the fuel reaches the injection pump. It is not the same as a generic inline filter. If the OEM specifies a vapor separator fuel filter, use that part or an approved equivalent.
When you get a maintenance quote, make sure the fuel system service items are actually in scope. Many quotes include oil and air filters but skip the vapor separator or final fuel filter because it is buried under the enclosure and takes extra time to replace. That omission can turn into a no-start call during your first long outage.
6. Ask about load bank testing and local code requirements before delivery
A generator can run beautifully for 10 minutes with no load and still fail when the transfer switch sends real power through it. No-load starts check that the engine turns and the alternator produces voltage. They do not check whether the set can carry a meaningful load for a sustained period.
For many commercial emergency and standby installations, the authority having jurisdiction references NFPA 110. That standard is about performance and testing, not just about having a generator bolted to a concrete pad. If the project is in a commercial building, ask whether a load bank test is required before you get final approval. Budget for that cost separately. It is cheaper to discover a cooling problem during a test than during an outage.
For an 80 kW home generator, you may not need a large rental load bank, but you still need a real connected load test. Start the set, transfer a loaded essential circuit, and measure voltage and frequency under that load before you call the project complete.
7. Order service parts with the generator, not after the emergency
The difference between a one-day outage and a three-day outage is often parts availability. If the generator has not been serviced in a while, the weakest link is usually the fuel system and the small wearable parts around it.
When you approve a Perkins generator order, also approve a basic spare parts kit. Include oil filters, air filters, fuel filters, and a vapor separator fuel filter if the system specifies one. Add belts, coolant, and a few common sensors if the budget allows. Store those parts with the generator and put the part numbers in the service file.
I made this mistake in my first year working with generator fleets. The machine was healthy. The missing $55 filter turned a simple service call into a delayed startup. That was the kind of error that is easy to make and completely avoidable with one line on the purchase order.

Wait: What About Inverter Generators?
One common question that shows up near generator buying guides is how does an inverter generator work and whether it can replace a large diesel standby unit.
Here is the short version. A traditional generator runs the engine at a fixed speed to keep the alternating current frequency stable. An inverter generator runs the engine at a variable speed, creates AC power, converts it to DC, and then uses an electronic inverter to create clean AC power at the frequency you need. Because the engine speed can drop when the load is light, inverter generators are often quieter and more fuel efficient for small loads.
They are a legitimate tool. If you only need to keep a refrigerator, lights, phones, and a small window AC running during an outage, a portable inverter generator might be the right choice. But if your real need is a 40 kW standby system for a business or an 80 kW whole-property backup system, a small inverter generator is not a substitute. They solve different problems.
There is no single best generator for every situation. There is only the machine that matches your load, your duty cycle, your fuel plan, and your site conditions. That is why the search starts with a checklist, not a generator brand.
